Nobomvu is an adult loggerhead turtle that has found herself in need of assistance so the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation is taking care of her.

Cape Town, South Africa (18 August 2021) – The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation works to protect our oceans by raising awareness and making sure our ocean animals are safe. They recently helped rescue Nobomvu, an adult loggerhead turtle in need of medical care.

Nobomvu is a beautiful red coloured loggerhead turtle weighing just over 50kgs. She was found entangled in a ghost fishing net near Gansbaai. Thankfully she was able to get to the safety of the beach. According to the aquarium, turtles entangled in nets can drown as they are pulled under.

13 people and 4 hours later, Nobomvu was safely at the aquarium. She has earned her name for her unique red colouring. According to the aquarium, she is that colour due to tiny microorganisms living on her carapace.

Nobomvu will be kept in observation for a while just to make sure she has no serious medical conditions. Once she has been signed off by the vet, she will be released back into the wild.

Over the few weeks, she has been in the teams care, Nobomvu has regained her appetite and is building her strength. The team are being cautiously optimistic about her health but will keep everyone updated via their social media channels.

Take a look at Nobomvu being released into her tank below. If you would like to support her recovery, you can do so here.
