World Ocean Day came with very good tidings. A new public art celebration coming to South Africa will turn unsuspecting walls into portals to our gorgeous oceans!
Cape Town, South Africa (08 June, 2023) — It’s World Ocean Day; a splash-in-the-face reminder to dive into efforts to help our oceans and aquatic neighbours thrive. While global dancers are synching up to raise awareness for all water bodies later this week, artists are prepping the paint for a dose of ocean artivism through murals and street art. Better yet, this year South Africa is joining the Sea Walls movement for the first time.
The Global Sea Walls Programme is heading to Cape Town, where unsuspecting walls will become portals to our oceans, making a splash as care-inspiring murals.
Following the International Public Arts Festival—which runs earlier on the Cape’s calendar—Sea Walls will also turn streets into a free gallery.
“This is is the first large-scale project on the African continent where Sea Walls will produce a new series of ocean advocacy murals and hosting various public events to increase interest and engagement around marine stewardship and action within the coastal community,” shared Wavescape who are a partner of the project.
The non-profit PangeaSeed Foundation’s global ocean murals aim to bring oceans to the world’s streets in a way that uplifts areas while raising awareness in the same stroke.
SJ Artists are also on the incredible team, known for their public art finesse that’s facilitated the Sea Point Promenade’s art walk before, as well as recycling initiatives through murals like Kev Seven’s ‘LOVE ULWANDLE’ (‘LOVE THE OCEAN’).
Beyond pouring art into the Mother City, the programme will also host a week-long free set of activities like youth outreach, coastal cleanups and street art tours as well as a short film screening and panel.
While artists set to feature haven’t been announced just yet, the Sea Walls dates have been — 3 to 11 November 2023.
