The Noordhoek community welcomed a bench made from 800 Ecobricks in March this year and now they have a beach whale to collect plastic too!
Noordhoek, South Africa (24 July 2020) – Project Noordhoeked received a beautiful bench earlier this year and when we wrote about it, the story went viral. That is because the community collaborated on the bench to make 800 Ecobricks which were used to build the structure.
Earth & Co teamed up with Project Noordhoeked to build a beautiful community bench at the beach. The bench was made using 800 EcoBricks, meaning around 400kgs of unrecyclable waste has been stored away instead of ending up in landfill and the ocean.
Now, every time they sit at the beach watching the waves crash, they will know their hard work paid off! Since the bench was installed, a new feature has been added nearby. A metal wire whale, which is used to hold plastic found on the beach.
Karoline Hanks shared a photo of the whale on the Noordhoeked Facebook group to thank the community for their help.
“Thanks to all those diligent beach walkers, Kakapo has a full belly and will be emptied this morning!
This is definitely one of the more successful elements of our little project – getting everyone involved (in their own time) in keeping our piece of paradise plastic-free!
The dream team will be focusing on the lagoon edge for the next while as we’ve noticed plenty of washed-up plastic there!”
