The NSRI make an appeal to the public, asking them to proceed with caution due to a Southern Right Whale carcass washing up on Kabeljous beach.

Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa (23 October 2020) – The NSRI has issued a public announcement to alert to the possibility of sharks along the coastline between Tsitsikamma and Port Elizabeth. This is due to a whale carcass washing up on the shore of Kabeljous near to Jeffrey’s Bay.

“NSRI are appealing to bathers, surfers and paddlers to be cautious on the Jeffrey’s Bay coastline, but also the coastline between Tsitsikamma and Port Elizabeth after a whale carcass, appearing to the carcass of a Southern Right Whale has washed ashore at Kabeljous near to Jeffrey’s Bay.

A whale carcass that has washed ashore usually attracts increased shark activity, and while no increased shark activity has been witnessed at this stage, it is normal for this to happen.

As a precaution, we are appealing bathers, surfers and paddlers to be cautious along the coastline between Tsitsikamma and Port Elizabeth.”

While an increase in shark activity has not yet been reported, they will appear within the next day or so. Should there be an emergency situation call 112 or 087 094 9774.
