In the heart of Northern KwaZulu-Natal, an intriguing wave of ocean awareness swept through 12 primary schools in the Macambini and Mkhwanazi Traditional Authority, sparking a passion for marine conservation in many young minds.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (12 February 2025) – Eager young minds from 12 primary schools within the Macambini and Mkhwanazi Traditional Authority in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, got to immerse themselves in all things marine and environmental conservation recently. An experience provided by the Ocean Awareness Team as part of the uThukela Marine Protected Area’s (MPA) Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) project.

More than just lessons, these school visits have sparked a passion for the planet.

Over 677 copies of Harry the Hammerhead Shark Spreads the Good News, a captivating children’s book by WILDTRUST’s Nikki Chapman, were gifted to learners.

Each child received both English and isiZulu versions, along with colouring books and crayons, igniting their imaginations and teaching them the importance of ocean conservation in an engaging way.

At Sakhesethu Primary School, WILDTRUST’s Dudu Vilane led an interactive session with Grade 7 learners, encouraging them to share their thoughts on the word “ocean.”

She expressed excitement about welcoming eMhlubulweni Primary School and Macambini Primary School into the programme this year, highlighting that the book handout perfectly coincided with World Read Aloud Day.

Educators like Mr Ndlovu from Macambini Primary School were thrilled about the growing partnership with WILDTRUST.

He recognised the invaluable alignment between the programme’s teachings and the school curriculum, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental conservation in his students.

“We truly appreciate this assistance from WILDTRUST. This initiative will encourage them to care for the environment as they grow,” Ndlovu said.
