Once a senior shelter dog who sat for yonks waiting to get adopted and wondering if he ever would, Stitch is now flourishing at his forever place and has recently celebrated his first year there!

Gauteng, South Africa (20 February 2025) — There are few things as heartwarming as seeing a shelter dog get their happy ending. Especially when they’re a senior dog that spent a significant amount of time wondering if said happy ending would ever come.

An old boy named Stitch knows a thing or two about the waiting game. Having spent well over a year with Fourways-based animal shelter Paws R Us: SA following his owner’s passing, Stitch was no stranger to being overlooked despite his charm, the most gentle eyes, and even a Mickey Mouse hairline.

Thankfully, his days of waiting and wondering are long behind him. A year ago, Stitch’s forever place and forever people, Kirsten and Jody, fell in love with the old sport and knew they had to make him part of their family.

“He has just brought so much joy into our lives and we hope we’re doing the same for him,” said Kirsten after a few months with Stitch in the mix.

“It was such a special breakthrough moment when we could finally deliver him into their care,’ Paws R Us: SA shared. “He waited well over a year and when you are a senior dog, each day of waiting matters even more…our hearts DELIGHT in the blessings our boy has received from [Kirsten and Jody].”

Now, a year later, his family celebrated his coming into their lives by throwing Stitch a little ‘1-year’versary’ featuring music, a party hat and (of course) treats.

Stitch’s story reminds us to keep an eye out for older boys and girls the next time we’re considering adopting a pet.

While any adoption is immensely rewarding, there is something magic in putting the gold in an older sport’s ‘golden years’.
