A new organic garden in the Nyembe Community Climate Adaptation Resource Centre aims to provide nutritious, home-grown food for local families.

uThukela, South Africa (09 September 2024) – To be able to put a warm, nutritious and cooked meal on the table for your family is so important and something that many people from underserved communities sadly don’t get very often.

The Nyembe Community Climate Adaptation Resource Centre in Northern KwaZulu-Natal is striving to combat food insecurity in its community by establishing an organic garden.

According to Wildlands, the project is aligned with the team’s mission to raise awareness about issues related to food insecurity.

The garden, possible through funding from the Blue Action Fund, serves as a nature-based solution, providing benefits to the community and promoting environmental well-being.

The garden also serves as a valuable educational tool, teaching community members about sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship, explains Nokuthula Mdletshe, the Community Ecosystem Restoration and Livelihoods Training Coordinator on the project.

“In this garden, we use natural systems readily available to everyone, ensuring affordability for the broader community. We utilise resources such as chicken coop and manure for planting, firewood ash as a natural pest control method, and dry grass for mulching, aiding in moisture retention,” she explained.

Nutritious vegetables such as green peppers, cabbage, spinach, and onions are grown in the garden and are selected based on their nutritional value and familiarity with local diets.
