The Owl Rescue Centre has been collecting plastic, recycling it and building nesting boxes but now they are setting their sights on the ocean to do even more good work.
The Owl Rescue Centre has been doing incredible work for both owls and the environment. The centre decided they wanted to make more of an impact in 2018 and have focussed on the environment. They decided to use plastic bottles and recycle them into owl huts.
Since sharing their story in January, they have had massive success in collecting plastic with many people sending huge amounts their way.
The whole idea of collecting plastic and turning it into nesting boxes started while the staff were discussing plastic in the oceans. They wanted to make sure that more plastic was recycled, that way less would end up in the ocean. Not only are they successfully making nesting boxes now, they are also making bat houses and bee hotels.
Their project has been a massive success and now they are taking it to a whole new level. They are going to tackle the problem at the source! The ocean…
The Owl Rescue Centre is currently raising funds to purchase a ship that will collect plastic out of the ocean. Their plan is to run it as a volunteer programme where people pay to live and work on the boat. The volunteers will then work at collecting plastic on the ocean surface as well as diving down to collect plastic on the ocean floor. The funds paid by the volunteers will pay for the running of the ship.
“We need R8 million to buy her, we have raised R350 000 so far if we can get 153 000 people to all agree to donate just R50 on the last day of July, she will be on the water by summer.”
It is so great to see people and organisations work so hard to make a big impact. The rescue centre is still collecting plastic as well so you can join in whichever way you like.
Here is some info about how to get involved in the recycling.
- They collect ALL plastic bottles and plastic containers (and caps too).
- No plastic bags, straws or other single-use plastics.
- You need to wash the plastic before dropping it off.
- Start collecting and select a drop-off location from their list. (See below)
- You can purchase their bulk bags and have it collected right from your home.
You can find a full list of drop-off locations here or for more info, email them at info@owlrescuecentre.org.z
So many people have collected for this project but neither drop-off points in Pinetown are accepting because plastic is not being removed by The Owl House project!!
