As wildlife warriors from all walks of the wild side prepare to unite for the 2024 Wildlife Ranger Challenge, Penguin Protectors are preparing to waddle into the mix!

South Africa (06 June 2024) — Come September, the Wildlife Ranger Challenge will unite wildlife warriors from all walks of the wild side as a fun and vital way to raise funds for their missions. While thoughts of rangers often lead us to images of those protecting bigger land animals like rhinos and elephants, marine wildlife rangers like SANCCOB’s penguin protectors, too play their role in safeguarding our country’s biodiversity.

The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) has a dedicated team of penguin and seabird rangers who look out for colonies that call the Western and Eastern Capes’ coastlines home. While much of their work is research-focused or centred around emergency rescues, they are gearing up to go beak-to-beak with the other rangers as part of the Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2024!

The penguin protectors have several teams who will undertake different legs of the Wildlife Ranger Challenge.

The Pengwins will tackle the Ranger Quiz, the Waddlers the Time Trial Challenge, the Fishcakes will handle the Push-ups and the Beaking Up team will show off their skills in the Sit-Up Challenge. Beyond the smaller challenges, the big event is the 21km weighted half marathon which the penguin troops will also be participating in.

“This may be a little out of their comfort zone compared to their daily tasks, but there is determination in their hearts,” says SANCCOB.

SANCCOB is calling on support for their teams, and you can be a part of that, here!
