The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds needs plants for their penguins; this is how you can help them.
Table View, Cape Town – The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) is a leading marine-orientated non-profit organisation in South Africa, experts and internationally recognised leaders in oiled wildlife response, rehabilitation and chick-rearing.
They have treated more than 90 000 oiled, ill, injured or abandoned endangered African penguins and other threatened seabirds since being established in 1968.
Their premises in Table View, located right on the Flamingo Vlei is home to hundreds of seabirds who are in the process of being rehabilitated back into the wild. The foundation has reached out to their Facebook followers, asking for donations for their penguin pen.
The area is lacking in nesting materials, all of which come in the form of plants. This is their plea:
“The Home Pen at our Table View centre needs more greenery for our resident seabirds & we are appealing to our neighbours for some plants, pots, potting soil and compost to assist, please. It will improve their surrounds and Rosemary & Lavender provides them with much-needed nesting material.
If you can assist, please connect via messenger or call reception on 021 557 6155. Suggested plants are Rosemary, Lavender, Daisy bushes, Helichrysum, Metalasia, Geraniums, Aloes & Restios. We hope to hear from you soon and thank you in advance.”
If you are an avid gardener with plants to spare or just someone who wants to do something good, you can contact them on the above-mentioned number or via their Facebook page here.
Watch as one of the penguins steals a whole bunch of nesting materials, the others don’t look happy about it.
