Tired of seeing rivers polluted with plastic waste and landfills overflowing with harmful materials? The Million+ initiative calls on South Africans to join the fight for a cleaner environment.

South Africa (30 August 2024) – The growing environmental catastrophe of rivers flowing with litter, waste washing into the shore and landfills overflowing with a toxic brew of plastic, glass, and paper, poses a grave threat to our health, our economy, and the very future of our beloved country.

The Million+ initiative, led by Polyco NPC, aims to inspire at least one million people in South Africa to commit to recycling their plastic packaging. The goal is to combat plastic pollution and preserve the beauty of our planet and environment.

“We believe that recycling is something that every person can do to make a positive impact on the earth,” the movement shared.

The Million+ initiative draws the power of networks, imagining a world in which each person who recycles inspires another person to begin recycling. This way, the dedication to recycling in South Africa will shift from a small minority to a widespread movement, leading to a cleaner environment for everyone.

“Basically, we want to get rid of plastic waste in our environment and to make recycling the normal thing for every South African. And it’s really easy, so easy in fact, even kids can do it.

“We want to see a South Africa where recycling is standard and where we no longer find plastic litter in the environment. This is going to take everyone in South Africa to be responsible for the plastic packaging that they buy and to recycle it after use.”

Million+ provides free online educational resources on recycling and does school outreach programmes where young people are encouraged to recycle, reduce the number of plastics going to landfills and end plastic waste in the environment.
