We have been talking about South Africa’s first plastic road since March last year and can finally celebrate that has been completed!
Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa (02 March 2020) – We first shared the exciting news about South Africa’s first plastic road in March 2019, a few months later they broke ground on the project and now, road users can use it as the project is finally finished!
The plastic road is on Woltemade Street in Jeffreys Bay. The success of the road has started talks between the international company and South Africa about the possibility of opening a factory in Kouga.
Executive Mayor of Kouga Municipality, Horatio Hendricks joined up with local civil engineering and construction companies SP Excel and Scribante Construction who partnered with the Scottish firm MacRebur to build a 1km stretch as a trial run. The trial road means that taxpayers didn’t need to fund this project.
Should the company invest in building a factory in South Africa, several issues will be tackled in one project. Jobs will be created, a use of excessive plastic will be created, and potholes will be addressed with the new roads.
It is said that about 1.5 tons of plastic was used to make the 1km stretch of road. That is around 1.8 million plastic bags!
Executive Mayor Horatio cut the ribbon at the opening. He said he was proud to have the first eco-friendly road in Africa.
“The result is a road that is more durable and also friendlier to the environment,”
“The plastic was turned into pellets using a special formula and then added to the asphalt mix used for the top layer of the road.”
The road was officially opened on Friday, the 28th of February. Let us know if you have driven on it yet? What do you think about the new road?
