Usually general swimming advice says that we shouldn’t swim after eating… but in Zimbabwe, you shouldn’t swim or you’ll get eaten!
Zimbabwe – Ali Conn, a Good Things Guy reader, posted photos of a surprise “creepy crawly” leisurely hanging around in his father’s swimming pool.
The Nile Crocodile is a large and aggressive species found in Zimbabwe with a broad snout, especially in older animals. It has a dark bronze coloration and darkens as the animal matures. The species lives in a variety of freshwater habitats in Zim but is also found in brackish water. It is an apex predator that is capable of taking a wide array of African vertebrates, including large ungulates and other predators.
Crocodile attacks on humans are common in places where the aquatic reptiles are native and human populations live.
Unlike other “man-eating” crocodiles, such as the saltwater crocodile, the Nile crocodile lives in close proximity to human populations in Zimbabwe, so contact is more frequent. Although most attacks are not reported, the Nile crocodile is estimated to kill hundreds of people each year, which is more than all other crocodilian species combined.
And Ali’s father (Andy Conn) may have actually swam with the young croc the night before!
“My dad always goes for swims morning & evening and the craziest thing is he actually went for a late-night swim last night!!!
And then this morning he came across this little “creepy crawly”. No idea where it came from but he let out a little yelp when he found it in the pool.”
Andy immediately called some help to get the croc out of the swimming pool and together they managed to catch it and set it free, far away from his property.
