Collaboration between animal welfare organisations means animals always get the very best care; the Spings SPCA and Johannesburg Wildlife Vet saved a porcupine, making sure it was safely released somewhere new.
Springs, South Africa (17 August 2022) – The Springs SPCA received a call about a porcupine in the suburbs. They managed to catch it and take it to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital which specialises in caring for indigenous wildlife. The organisation cares for all indigenous wildlife free of charge, relying solely on donations, in an effort to save as many species as possible.
The wildlife vet has worked with several SPCA branches in rescuing and caring for porcupines. Despite them being so large and spikey, many live in urban settings without being detected because they are nocturnal and live in large drain systems. Just recently one was brought to the vet for a bath after being coating in cooking oil that was most-likely poured down a drain.
Whenever a porcupine is rescue and taken to the wildlife vet, the staff get it back to health and release it somewhere less populated.
“A sub-adult South African porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) was found in a built up environment and caught and transported to us by the SPCA Springs Official Site.
Thankfully there was nothing physically wrong with the porcupine and he had a healthy appetite. He was just not safe where he was found and we have since relocated him to a new and suitable area.
Thanks Springs SPCA for always looking out for our wildlife!” – Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital
