The Retrade Project is an award winning organisation dedicated to promoting recycling, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment. Through various initiatives, The Retrade Project aims to create a positive impact on the environment while fostering unity and equity within communities.

Taking place on Tuesday, 18 July 2023 at 22 Newcomb Avenue, Walmer Heights, the Retrade Project Mandela Day Open Day event serves as a platform for individuals, businesses, churches and schools to come together and contribute to a greener and more equitable future. The Retrade Project encourages everyone to engage in practical actions that will make a tangible difference in the lives of their communities as well as the environment in which they live.

During the Open Day, attendees will have the opportunity to view and drop off their recycling materials at the recycling depot in Walmer Heights. Bring along your colleagues or children and begin fostering a culture of responsible waste management in your home and work place. The Retrade Project believes that recycling is a crucial aspect of environmental preservation and aims to promote this message through hands-on involvement.

For more ways to get involved, The ReTrade Project also invites community members and businesses to collect 67 tins, symbolising the 67 years Nelson Mandela dedicated to public service and fighting for social justice. Businesses are encouraged to participate in this meaningful endeavor by rallying their employees to collect and donate tins, showcasing their commitment to sustainable practices and community development.

Furthermore, businesses and schools can also run food drives to collect non-perishable items for donation. By addressing food insecurity, The Retrade Project aims to uplift vulnerable communities and ensure that no one goes hungry.

Another way to contribute to The Retrade Project is to donate gently used clothing and blankets. These donations will be redistributed to individuals in need, providing them with essential items and spreading warmth and compassion as well as helping some of our micro-enterprise owners.

Lastly, The Retrade Project invites everyone to spread the word about this initiative and inform those in need about the services provided. Someone knocking on your door? Someone asking for your help? Send them our way to become a part of our trading program where waste pickers can exchange recyclable waste for daily essentials. By sharing information, individuals can directly impact the lives of others, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity within the community.

Speaking about the event, Maria Grewar, The Director at The Retrade Project, expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “Mandela Day is a time to reflect on the values of compassion, equality, and environmental stewardship. We are excited to offer a platform for individuals and corporations to get involved practically and make a real difference in their communities. Together, we can honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela and work towards a brighter, more sustainable future.”

The Retrade Project’s Mandela Day Open Day celebration promises to be an event filled with purpose and action. By participating, attendees can demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability, community empowerment, and the values championed by Nelson Mandela.
