Lazuli suffered horrific injuries at the hands of hyenas after tragically losing his mother. But not all hope was lost for this little guy when the Care for Wild team rescued him and worked around the clock to restore him to good health.

Mpumalanga, South Africa (23 February 2025) – Six years ago, a young and badly wounded rhino orphan had fallen victim to hyenas before finding refuge at the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary.

Like many orphaned rhinos, this little fella, Lazuli, lost his mother at the hands of poachers, leaving him to fend for himself in the wild.

As a heartbreaking result, hyenas tore away his tail and ears, leaving him critically injured and fighting for his life.

“Our team worked around the clock to save him, treating his wounds and giving him the care he so desperately needed.

“But recovery isn’t just about healing the body—it’s about restoring the spirit. For Lazuli, that came in the form of another orphan, Ribbon. She became his companion, his comfort, and together, they found the strength to move forward,” said Care for Wild.

Not only has he made an amazing recovery, but this week, he celebrated his sixth rescue anniversary, and yes, we’re chopping onions!

Lazuli has not only survived but thrived with his bestie right beside him. He and Ribbon are now embarking on their next chapter of rewilding as they prepare to become the rhinos they were always supposed to be!

“As they prepare to return to their natural habitat and ensure the survival of their species.

“We are so proud of Lazuli and thank you to everyone who has followed and supported him over the last six years,” Care for Wild said.
