‘South African Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust’ has treated over 12 000 animals for free in a new campaign targeting pets in informal settlements.

South African Mass Animal Sterilisation Trust (SA.MAST) is gearing up to celebrate the completion of the first phase of their intensive sterilisation campaign.

‘Alpha Impact’ – the largest area-specific and goal-driven campaign of its kind ever to have taken place on the African continent.

Here’s what they will be celebrating:

  • An estimated 70 – 80% mass sterilisation and primary treatment coverage rate achieved for all of Khayelitsha.
  • Over 12,000 patients collected, sterilized, vaccinated, treated for parasites and returned to their homes, whether a shack or RDP house for free.
  • The initiation of the second phase for 2017 ‘Clean Sweep’ to seek out any new or missed animals.
  • The planning of phase three ‘New Dawn’ in 2018 which will see SA.MAST move their campaign into neighbouring informal settlements, extending the mass sterilisation, primary treatment and humane education corridor.
  • The vision, determination and compassion of their dedicated team, as well as Khayelitsha residents and the generosity of individual and corporate donors.
  • The first Open Day for their new hospital established in 2015 with enlarged canine and feline wards, consultation rooms and surgery to treat sick or injured animals.

To capture this major milestone, internationally acclaimed graffiti artist, Mak1One, will be transforming the entire exterior surface of the hospital into an iconic work of art. Members of the press are invited to see this work in progress leading up to the 7th December.

The reason I got involved is because SA.MAST has risen to the challenges that were set before us in 1994. Their actions, the relationship they have with the Khayelitsha community and the partnerships they have with the broader South African and international community, is a visible reflection of the words spoken by Archbishop Desmond Tutu when he said “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” – Mak1One

“Involving communities in and out of Khayelitsha in the transformation of this space is an invitation a motivation and a reminder for all of us to take ownership of what is being done at this hospital for the people and animals in this community. We must all respect and protect something that enriches and uplifts us as human beings.” – Mak1One

Members of the press are also extended a warm invitation to join SA.MAST on this special day marking not only the success of ‘Alpha Impact’ but the outstanding gift of a landmark work of art that will attract locals and visitors alike for years to come.
