A Wildlife Monitor recently encountered his strangest seal rescue yet after discovering the poor sea creature struggling with a snorkelling mask tightly wrapped around its neck.
Cape Town, South Africa (24 January 2025) – Reports of seal entanglements are never great news to come by but we are eternally grateful for the tireless efforts of wildlife heroes, conservationists and honourable bystanders who play critical roles in assisting many of these defenceless sea creatures from threats beyond their control.
The marine wildlife team of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation recently made the most unexpected of discoveries after being notified about a seal in distress.
Met with one of the strangest seal entanglements yet, Elviro Malan, a new Wildlife Monitor for the Marine Wildlife Programme, removed a snorkelling mask from a Cape fur seal’s neck!
The Foundation shared how the incident just goes to show how human activities can have a dire impact on marine wildlife like seals.
“Even though the mask was probably not purposefully discarded into the ocean, it ended up endangering the life of a seal.
“It is vital that we are mindful about where and how we discard our waste – it could save a life,” Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation said.
Every effort, no matter how small, can help protect our ocean and the incredible wildlife that calls it home.
