In Gugulethu, a grieving dog named Sergeant has touched hearts with his unwavering loyalty, waiting outside the SAPS station for an owner who will never return – proof that love transcends loss and time.

Western Cape, South Africa (11 January 2025) – In the heart of Gugulethu, a story of love, loyalty, and hope has captured the hearts of many, reminding us of the profound connection between humans and their canine companions.

Known affectionately as “Sergeant,” or “Serg” for short, this grieving dog has become Gugulethu’s very own Hachikō – a symbol of unyielding devotion.

Sergeant’s “tail” began in mid-December when an elderly man arrived at the Gugulethu SAPS station seeking medical assistance, accompanied by his loyal dog. After being taken to the hospital, the man tragically passed away, leaving behind his faithful companion. With no way of understanding the loss, Sergeant chose to wait – day after day – outside the station doors, looking for his beloved owner in every face that exited.

Moved by the dog’s unwavering loyalty, the station’s exhibit commander, Captain Veale, gave him the name “Sergeant,” a title earned through his dedication.

“He reminded us of the values we strive to uphold – duty, commitment, and service,” Captain Veale said.

“Sergeant became one of us in every way that mattered.”

The officers tried their best to care for him. He stood beside them during parades, finding small moments of solace in the camaraderie of his new family. At night, he slept beneath the station’s vehicles, his presence a quiet reminder of love that refuses to fade.

But despite their best efforts, the void left by his owner began to take its toll. His appetite waned, his spark dimmed, and it became clear that Sergeant needed more than the station could offer.

“Asking the SPCA to take him was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make,” Captain Veale admitted.

“But I knew it was the right thing for him. He deserved a chance to heal and find a new purpose.”

On January 7, Sergeant’s journey took a bittersweet turn. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA stepped in, with Inspector Jeffrey Mfini collecting him.

“When I saw him, I felt the weight of his sorrow,” Mfini shared.

“This wasn’t just a dog waiting – it was a soul grieving. I want nothing more than to see the spark back in his eyes, that little twinkle of happiness that comes with love reciprocated.”

Under the care of the SPCA, Sergeant is now on the road to healing. Apart from a few ticks, he is healthy and ready to embark on a new chapter of his life.

“Sergeant’s story isn’t just about loss – it’s about how love endures in spite of it,” said Belinda Abraham, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

“Dogs give us their whole hearts, asking for little in return but kindness and care. It’s up to us, as a society, to prove ourselves worthy of that devotion.”

The SPCA is committed to honouring Sergeant’s late owner by finding him a home that will cherish and respect his loyalty. As he waits once more, this time it’s not for a loved one who will never return, but for a new family who will love him as deeply as he deserves.

Sergeant’s journey reminds us that even in the face of heartache, hope can find its way back. It’s a story of enduring love, the kindness of strangers, and the promise of brighter days ahead.
