Sophia the Rhino calf was traumatised by the loss of her mother and then attacked by a clan Hyena but she is recovering well at a very special sanctuary.
Septemeber 22nd is World Rhino Day and to celebrate, the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary shared a hopeful story and an adorable video with the world.
Sophia, the newest arrival at the sanctuary has made a remarkable recovery in just a few weeks. She arrived at the sanctuary deeply traumatised after watching her mother’s fatal attack at the hands of poachers and then becoming a victim of a vicious mauling by a clan of Hyena.
Thankfully, she was found and taken to the sanctuary to be cared for. They shared a hopeful message as part of their count-down to World Rhino Day.
“Sophia has made a remarkable breakthrough by overcoming her pain and trauma at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary. It has taken Sophia just over a month to truly overcome the trauma that she has been through after her mother was killed and she herself was attacked by hyenas.”
“Sophia is now allowing her caretakers to work with her by cooling her off with water and a soothing brush while avoiding her bandages getting wet. Not only has this breakthrough allowed us to give her a cooling bath that soothes, relaxes her and makes her happy, but also allows us to be able to work with her wounds without having to sedate her!”
“Soon, all of her bandages will be removed and her caretakers can continue to heal her after the amazing work done so far by our various veterinarians. We are very excited about this new development as she gets stronger and is one step closer to being able to be introduced to other rhinos.”
The sanctuary cares for a number of orphans so as soon as Sophia is ready, she will be able to start making new friends. You can find out more about the sanctuary here.
