What’s better than a happy furry friend? How about over 160 of them?! That’s exactly what the animal heroes of Garden Route SPCA got to make possible and witness at this month’s Spay-a-thon for the cats and dogs of the Golden Valley!

George, South Africa (25 March 2025) – Thanks to the outpouring of love and support from kind humans who continuously look out for animals who cannot speak for themselves, the Garden Route SPCA’s George branch was able to make a lot of furry friends tail-wagging happy and save two pit bulls from dire circumstances they didn’t deserve to endure.

Earlier this month, those in the charitable business of bringing about the widest canine smiles and softest feline purrs held a Spay-a-thon for cats and dogs living in the Golden Valley area.

This was all made possible by the support of the charity’s Steri-Squad fundraising efforts and a very generous donor!

“We were able to sterilise 169 pets and will continue next week with more pets from owners who were not home during the week.

“Outreach campaigns are not only about sterilisation! We also conduct welfare inspections at the homes of the animals we treat,” Garden Route SPCA said.

The volunteers were able to reach many more pet owners, teaching them about the proper care of animals. Beyond this preventative work, the dedicated team also rescued two pit bulls found with fight wounds, old scars, as well as septic wounds and bruises.

According to the SPCA, these dogs had both been used for breeding, but thankfully, they won’t have to suffer anymore as they were confiscated and have been given a chance at a better and far more peaceful life.

It takes a few good people joining hands, heads and resources to make the world -especially for those who so desperately need loving care and support- a much better place!

The Steri-Squad, along with sponsors and SPCA volunteers, is greatly appreciated for their ongoing efforts to bring positive change, relief, and joy to many precious furbabies!
