A Durbanville family received a massive shock when they came home to find a Caracal sitting on top of their kitchen cabinet. The SPCA caught and released it.
A Durbanville family came home to find a cat sleeping up on the kitchen cabinet. The only problem was that it wasn’t actually a domesticated cat. It was a Caracal, also known as a Rooikat.
The family immediately called the SPCA to ask for assistance.
The Caracal is a nocturnal wildcat that is an expert climber and regularly takes refuge in trees. This explains why the cat climbed up so high in the kitchen. They are quite aggressive, secretive and solitary animals.
Due to being labelled as problem animals and hunted by farmers, the Caracal became even more elusive and spotting one has become a beautifully rare sight.
The SPCA filmed the moment the caracal was released and shared it on Facebook. Watch the video below.
Not every day a caracal aka rooikat is found on someone’s kitchen cupboards but that is exactly what our inspector found last week in Durbanville – after a bit of a tricky capture this stunning creature was safely released back into the nearby nature reserve
