The Swartland and West Coast SPCA stepped in to provide crucial support to subsistence farmers and their animals whose lives were turned upside down by recent floods.
Malmesbury, South Africa (16 September 2024) – Heavy rains and surging floodwaters wreaked havoc on the lives of subsistence farmers in the Riverlands area in Malmesbury, damaging their crops and shelters and threatening the lives of their precious animals.
In response to this, the Swartland and West Coast SPCA asked farming expert Thembi, who leads the Compassion in Farming project at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, to provide his expertise and guidance to these farmers.
“Thembi’s deep understanding of humane farming practices and animal welfare is invaluable.
“His work emphasizes not just productivity but also kindness, dignity, and sustainability in farming,” Swartland & West Coast SPCA said.
The community outreach efforts form part of the organisation’s approach to assisting and supporting the farmers in Riverlands so that they can rebuild their livelihoods while ensuring that their animals are treated with the compassion they deserve.
“We believe that through this collaboration, farmers will gain practical, compassionate solutions to care for their livestock, especially in times of crisis. This initiative helps create a better future for both the farmers and their animals, reinforcing the importance of animal welfare in subsistence farming.”
The Swartland and West Coast SPCA also recently delivered food for the animals in the farmers’ care and were happy to see the pigs in warm and dry stys, which is especially important for the piglets.
The team also distributed more clothing, generously donated by the wonderful residents of Yzerfontein, displaying the togetherness of the community and the power of compassion in the face of adversity.
