Teams behind the Khoinania Forest Restoration Project are celebrating the seeds of efforts spanning four years, which saw thousands of trees planted!
Eastern Cape, South Africa (18 August, 2023) — As forest restoration efforts continue to play an imperative role in balancing eco-scales, the Khoinania Forest Restoration Project has made important strides; turning over multiple new leaves for the area.
From 2019, Greenpop Foundation and Khoinania Farm teamed up to restore degraded areas back to their former natural glory in land near the Tsitsikamma National Park.
For those who don’t know, the Tsitsikamma National Park is protected and stands as one of the most important natural regions along the Garden Route. However, while the National Park has seen protection largely due to the indigenous flora that call it home, the deforestation’s impact in nearby areas has tainted this protection.
Thanks to the efforts of people working on the Khoinania Forest Restoration Project, a lot of good, green work over the past four years is being celebrated, spanning different sites.
Here’s What’s Been Achieved for the Trees Through the Project:
- 4220 trees have been planted with 500 more on the way in 2023
- 1.8 Hectares of alien vegetation have been managed
- And 1.6 Hectares of previously alien-invaded land have been restored
All these efforts have helped conserve biodiversity, increased the number of indigenous tree species and have helped improve water regulation as well as lending a spade to mitigating climate change.
