A tiny Khayelitsha puppy named “Trouble” has become a local hero after fearlessly defending his family from gangsters.
Western Cape, South Africa (18 December 2023) – A four-month-old puppy named Trouble has become the unexpected hero of a Khayelitsha neighbourhood, bravely standing up to a group of gangsters attempting to invade his home.
Trouble’s fearless actions have not only captured the hearts of his community but have also spotlighted the incredible bond between humans and our furry companions.
Trouble, a spirited crossbreed, displayed remarkable bravery when a band of criminals targeted his home on a fateful Tuesday morning. Faced with the imminent threat, Trouble’s fur mother, with a blend of growls and determined pursuit, managed to scare off the intruders. Undeterred by his diminutive size, Trouble joined the chase, barking defiantly as he ran after the fleeing gangsters. Unfortunately, the heroic pursuit took a toll on Trouble as the criminals retaliated, resulting in a broken radius and ulnar of his front left leg.
Despite the adversity, the indomitable spirit of this tiny Khayelitsha puppy shone through. Mdzananda Animal Clinic’s dedicated staff promptly responded, dispatching their animal ambulance to collect Trouble and transport him to their NPO veterinary hospital in Khayelitsha.
Marcelle du Plessis, the Fundraising and Communications Executive, explained that due to Trouble’s young age, surgery was not immediately required.
“Being so small, his bones are still growing. With a splint bandage to keep the bones back in line, they will heal correctly,” she added.

Trouble is expected to wear the splint bandage for two to three weeks, after which veterinarians will assess his healing progress. Currently, the pup is recuperating safely at home, and a follow-up check-up is scheduled at the animal clinic in three weeks. Despite the challenges he faced, Trouble has left an enduring mark on the community, earning the admiration of those around him.
“He is a fearless little puppy and a big hero in our community’s hearts. Moral of the story? Be brave, no matter your size,” remarks Phiwe Finca, the Marketing Officer at Mdzananda Animal Clinic.
Trouble’s resilience has been an inspiration to everyone who has heard his story, reminding us that courage knows no bounds. For those moved by Trouble’s story and wishing to contribute to his medical care, donations can be made to Mdzananda Animal Clinic through the following details:
