Fire tourists are becoming more prevalent during the wildfire season, so trained wildfire documentary photographer Justin Sullivan shares tips on how to support emergency personnel, instead of hinder them.
Cape Town, Western Cape (19 February 2019) – Justin Sullivan, the incredible wildfire documentary photographer, has created an awareness video for fire tourists. He has created these tips to help educate people about their risks when trying to film fires themselves.
He is trained to be on the ground near these wildfires and has specific permission from the various fire teams he works with. Many people are in awe of the work he does, as are we!
Justin hopes to get people wildfire ready as it is now the season for them to flare up. There has been a massive increase in the number of fires, and while things may be calm, they could flare up at any moment; flares can put fire tourists in danger.
To start, Justin urges people to head in the opposite direction to any fire. People block the roads preventing emergency services from getting to the fire quickly by trying to get closer. They also run the risk of getting into trouble and resources having to be diverted for rescue efforts instead.
Another major issue is drones. Drones are prohibited from being in the air during wildfires as helicopters need the air space. If a drone is spotted in the air space, helicopters are grounded, which seriously hampers the efforts to put out fires.
Justin believes that fire is everyone’s fight. Therefore, we should be doing everything in our power to prevent them, to assist the men and women that fight them and to come forward and report anyone who is responsible for them.
Watch the video below and remember everything just in case you find yourself becoming a fire tourist.
