Trash Trolley Recyclers

Gabriel Ally was fascinated by the trolley trash recyclers he saw around Joburg, chatting to them he came up with a concept that would help them do more!

We are running out of Landfill space, by 2030 there will be no more space for waste! This is why it is so important to recycle and reuse as much of our waste as possible! Gabriel Ally saw an opportunity to make the lives of trash recyclers easier and to ensure they had the means to do more!

The trash recycling guys go through our weekly rubbish removing glass, metal and paper. They use these items to earn an income. While to some it seems like a degrading job, these men and woman earn an honest living and at the same time, give back to the planet by doing our recycling!

Gabriel Ally is a rising star! Head Prefect at St David’s Marist in Inanda and Mayor of the Johannesburg Junior Council. He was offered an Allan Gray Fellowship and set off to UCT in the hopes that his degree would create opportunities for him to make a difference in society.

While on a study break back in Joburg he was bothered by the sight of the street recyclers broken down trolley’s, he decided to do his own research and interviewed the guys to find out more about what they did.

“The first guy I spoke to, literally disappeared into a rubbish heap and resurfaced with the Business Day in hand! I knew there had to be a better way for these fathers, husbands, breadwinners to earn their daily keep, so I started working at it,” – Gabriel Ally

That is when he decided to start his enterprise called GezaJozi. The concept is an electric tri-cycle that can safely carry the weight of the recyclable goods, it is currently on it’s third prototype.  The next design phase will host solar panels fitted on the top as an additional source of energy to power the e-trikes.

Gabriel’s solution is a recycle e-Trike, a 500W electrically-powered tricycle which is designed to double the output of trolleys, while simultaneously improving their safety on the road. These tricycles can transport around 150kg of recyclable waste over a distance of 50km!

GreenOvation awarded Gabriel “The GreenOvation Start-Up Social Innovator Award” in 2015 for all the work he has done to better the lives of the trolley guys and the environment.
