KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (24 November 2022) – A baby hippo that was raised by rhinos finally met someone who looked just like him.
Charlie, the abandoned hippo, was raised with a group of orphaned rhinos, which became his best friends. The rescuers at the Zululand Rhino Orphanage put the animals together as both species are incredibly social and they knew the friendship would help these little bundles of cuteness grow into bigger, stronger animals that could hopefully be set free, back in the wild.
“They bonded really quickly. They were all super playful, cuddling and sleeping together, and they grew a really strong friendship from there.”
The problem is that Charlie started believing that he was one of the rhinos and took on very un-hippo-like traits.
Hippos spend most of their days in the water, snoozing while avoiding the sun and most of their nights are spent foraging for food but for Charlie, daytime meant rhino playtime, something he couldn’t miss out on.
The rescue team knew they had to introduce another hippo into the equation. They put out the call and found Moomin, a little orphaned hippo whose best friend was a sheep.
