You’d be forgiven for thinking the North Pole set up shop in South Africa this year after seeing this snow show in the Eastern Cape!
Barkly, Eastern Cape (30 June, 2023) — Like the sound of free biltong, certain ‘is this really happening’ moments tend to get most South Africans very excited. At the top of the ‘things that make South Africans excited’ list is the idea of getting to experience the snowscape and for the town of Barkly in the Eastern Cape, snow didn’t just fall, it showed off!
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the North Pole uprooted to South Africa this year after watching this video filmed by Anelle De Bruin capturing the snowy scenes in Barkly.

South Africans from other provinces couldn’t help but share their hopes that other provinces (like Cape Town and Gauteng) might exchange their winter weather patterns for a few snow kisses. Others couldn’t believe that we do get snow in parts of South Africa, with one user humorously sharing, ‘Did South Africa move continents?’
While Barkley turned into a snow town, other parts of the Eastern Cape have also been blanketed in snow, with some warnings for disruptive snowfall over parts of the Drakensberg and along the mountain passes, as Vox Weather recently reported.
As for the rest of South Africa, we’ll have to make do with our other winter pastimes, like planning for Spring.
