South African firefighters are bringing hope and unity to Alberta, Canada with their spirited arrival, ready to battle the region’s record wildfires and uplift the community with their song and dance.

 

Alberta, Canada (31 July 2024) – South African firefighters are making headlines once again as they step up to help other nations around the globe battle wildfires. This time, the heroes from South Africa have arrived in Alberta, Canada, bringing not just their expertise but also their infectious spirit and energy.

Hundreds of joyful South African firefighters were called on to assist a Canadian region battling record wildfires. Their arrival was marked by a vibrant display of song and dance, uplifting the spirits of everyone at the Edmonton International Airport. The South African rescue team, consisting of about 200 firefighters and support staff, landed on July 29, 2024, and immediately made an impact with their energetic welcome.

In the video, which is bringing us all the feels, you can hear the South African heroes singing, while Canadian onlookers are clapping, crying and shouting, “We love you”!

The team left South Africa on Sunday and is expected to be deployed in Alberta for 39 days. Their mission is to help control the wildfires that have swept through Alberta’s Jasper National Park, causing significant damage, including the destruction of nearly half of the historic town of Jasper.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had called for global assistance to tackle these unprecedented blazes, and South Africa responded with a contingent known for their bravery and resilience.

Canadian authorities reported that while progress has been made in suppressing the fires in Jasper, the battle is far from over. Officials have warned that the fire may continue to burn for months, making the arrival of the South African team all the more crucial. Parks Canada, the government agency managing the country’s national parks, noted that this is the largest wildfire in more than 100 years in Jasper National Park.

This isn’t the first time South African firefighters have extended their helping hands across borders. In 2023, 215 firefighters from South Africa were deployed to Canada to combat fires in the Vanderhoof-Fort St. James fire zone. Their efforts were praised globally, showcasing their dedication and commitment to preserving nature and saving lives.
