The fires that spread across Lions Head and Signal Hill have been contained, now in the smouldering embers, the search for injured wildlife begins.
Cape Town, South Africa – Cape of Good Hope SPCA Wildlife Team is currently on post-fire Recovery and Rescue. They have been on standby for the last 24-hours. They are currently working alongside fire and rescue teams to sweep over the scorched area to find any injured wildlife.
The SPCA has asked that members of the public to please keep an eye out for wildlife that might be in distress and to contact them immediately.
“Thanks to the valiant and incredibly brave efforts from the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue services, last night’s terrifying blaze across Lion’s Head and Signal Hill has been kept under control.
We are deeply grateful to these brave men and women for putting themselves in the line of danger all to ensure the safety of both humans and animals alike.”
To date, the SPCA has yet to receive reports on any affected domestic animals but they are almost certain that many wild animals would have fallen victim to the fast moving flames as it swept across the Table Mountain National Park.
“Trainee Wildlife Inspectors Edward Julius and Larry Liversage have been working alongside the fire and rescue teams in order to sweep the area and offer help to any injured animals, many of which could still surface over the next few days.”
“We ask the public to please keep an eye out for any animals, both pets and wildlife, that could be in need of our help. Please leave flat water trays outside for wildlife in need of hydration.”
Please report any animals in distress to the CoGH SPCA on 021 700 4158/9 or a/h on 083 326 1604.
