Afrikaburn 2018

The burn is back for it’s 11th year… and the pictures are not disappointing at all!

Since 2007 AfrikaBurn has brought the spirit of Nevada’s famous Burning Man to Stonehenge Private Reserve in South Africa – complete with crazy outfits, surreal art installations and all-night parties.

Launched the year, AfrikaBurn is the spectacular result of the creative expression of participants who gather once a year in the Tankwa Karoo to create a temporary city of art, theme camps, costume, music and performance!

“AfrikaBurn is the spectacular result of the creative expression of participants who gather once a year in the Tankwa Karoo to create a temporary city of art, theme camps, costume, music and performance!”

AfrikaBurn’s aim is to be radically inclusive and accessible to anyone. The touchstone of value in their culture will always be immediacy: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, ritual before symbolism, work before vested interest, participant support before sponsorship.

Nothing is for sale but ice at the event. Nothing.

There are no vendors, no advertising or branding. It just doesn’t fit in. It’s not even a barter economy – it’s a decommodified zone with a gift economy that’s about giving without expecting anything in return.

AfrikaBurn has become the biggest art festival in Africa, drawing a large number of artists, musicians, vehicle enthusiasts and tourists to the desert in South Africa each year.

Here is a collection of pictures from this years event:

AFRiKA B🔥RN – you‘ve been quiet a ride 🎢 From getting my 🚲 stolen within the first hour of arrival, to the most beautiful sunrises 🌅 in the Karoo, to heavy wind forces 🌪 and sandstorms, to meeting beautiful souls 🧚🏻‍♀️, to being without cellphone reception 📵and money for 4️⃣ days, to all the beautiful art that everyone put up, to the oneness of the human race 🌍 and last but not least, our car breaking down on the way out (we actually got towed back all the way to CapeTown) and NO it was not the tires but an electrical problem, to all the people that helped us getting our car back to the Tankwa Padstall and Susan & Hein from the Padstall who cooked us a lovely dinner at their self sufficient house while we were waiting for the tow truck. This week was filled with all kind of emotions and surely will not be forgotten. Thank you everyone 🙌 @larusca @caroline.dittmann @benjamin_nivison #onelove #afrikaburn #burner #tankwakaroo #tankwatown
