AI took a dip in the world of fashion and imagined what Cape Town’s version of the Met Gala might look like!

Cape Town, South Africa (08 May 2024)—On the first Monday of every May, fashion lovers around the world saddle up and strap in to enjoy the fashion world’s Olympics—the Met Gala.

Unlike the prestigious sporting games, the Met Gala is an event of unspoken competition; where celebrities and the designers who showcase them as canvases under unique (and often misinterpreted) themes, compete in the battle of wearable art in the world’s most glittering fundraising event.

This year’s Met Gala undertook the Theme “Garden of Time”, where everyone from seasoned Met attendees like Zendaya and new-comers like South Africa’s own Tyla (who rocked the famous carpet in a sand gown), strutted their best looks at the Metropolitan Museum of art. For many, the looks were easily worthy of fairytale applause. Others might have better luck next year. But as audiences around the world play Fashion Police and imagine what they would’ve worn on the green carpet, some South Africans have kicked things up a notch using AI.

A prompt that asked AI what Cape Town’s Met Gala would look like has created many proudly local looks well worth a seat at Table Mountain. AI has had its fair share of local imaginings in recent times; ranging from what AI imagines an ‘average’ day in South Africa to be like all the way to envisioning action figures representing some of Cape Town’s most talked about suburbs.

Now, it’s the Met Gala’s turn to taste a little local flair—fashion edition.

Prompted by the team at Neighbourgood, the looks brought the Met Gala to Cape Town, and Cape Town to the Met. From dresses embellished with natural flora to architecture unique to the City, to proud protea and green and gold accents and even hints of Gert-Johan Coetzee designs, the vibrant colours and vivid imagery gave the real event a run for its money.

Now we just need someone to ask AI what a South African Met Gala would look like and get representation for all our provinces! Think you can get AI to cook something up? Let us know in the comments!
