It was predicted that it would snow, and snow it has! Clarens resident Imogen Tarita shared a video this morning of the snow falling in the area.

Clarens, South Africa (04 June 2024) — It started snowing in Clarens at 8:20 a.m., and resident Imogen Tarita captured the moment on camera. While “real” winter technically only starts on the 21st of June 2024, it pretty much decided the 1st of June was the better option, leaving us all wondering if this season is going to be the coldest yet!

From tornados in KZN (stay tuned today, we are busy with an update on how to lend a helping hand here) to flooding in the Eastern Cape and Gauteng’s first cold front.

Clarens, a town in the Free State, is boarding Lesotho and is prone to all the cold spells that affect the high mountains of our neighbouring nation. Snow was predicted for the small country, and true to form; it has not had any thoughts of boundaries and decided to sprinkle the icy-cold but exciting snow along the escarpment and onto South Africa’s side of things.

This means winter is well and truly here! And for all those eager snow hunters, this is your first chance of the season. Let’s hope it sticks!

In case you needed real proof winter is really here… Take a look at Imogen’s video below. We are running off to unpack the winter beanies and gloves in earnest now. Stay warm folks!

Oh, and if you are looking for ways to support people this winter, here is our charity winter to-do list.
