Shoppers at Toys R Us Gateway got the opportunity to hang out with The Beast over the weekend.
South Africa’s much loved toy store, Toys R Us, kicked off the new year in high spirits, thrilling shoppers with an exclusive meet and greet session with popular Sharks rugby star, Tendai Mtawarira.
Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira (born 1 August 1985 in Harare, Zimbabwe) is a Zimbabwean-born South African rugby union player who currently plays for the Sharks in the Super Rugby competition. Mtawarira, a prop, is fondly known by friends and fans as “The Beast”. Roars of “Beast” are shouted by spectators and fans of the Sharks team whenever Mtawarira attains possession of the ball or makes a big tackle.
Mtawarira was selected as part of the South African National Rugby Union team and made his debut playing against Wales in a test match on 14 June 2008. The following week, on 21 June 2008, Mtawarira scored a try against Italy as well as winning the ‘Man of the Match’ award. He is the most capped prop in South African history.
Eager fans rushed to the store to get up close and personal with the Springbok loosehead prop but little did they realise that the tough powerhouse was soft at heart.
He spent time interacting with the children and further engaged in an autograph signing session.
“I really enjoyed connecting with fans at Toys R Us and I believe everyone needs to keep their inner kid alive. The team made it a fun visit, said Mtawarira.
Toys R Us & Babies R Us SA marketing manager, Nicole Annells said the team was delighted to host the rugby star adding that the exclusive appearance brought much joy to young fans.
