biggest lion cake south africa cakes

An incredibly talented Chef and Four Paws South Africa have teamed up to create the biggest lion cake ever to raise awareness to protecting lions in South Africa.

Baker and environmentalist Dot Klerck has joined forces with Four Paws South Africa to create the biggest lion cake ever.

Most birthday cakes are devoured within minutes of the candles being blown out – but not Dot Klerck’s cakes. These sugar sculptures are creations of such master artistry, beauty and sheer creativity that people are generally quite unwilling to make the all-important first slice into these edible sugar masterpieces.

But don’t make that mistake, because the inside of the cake is a taste sensation to knock your socks off!

Dot honed her skills in art school, but taught herself the basics (and more!) of cake decoration. She lives in Wellington in the wine region of the Cape, South Africa. Married to her (cake) engineer and right hand man and is the devoted mother of four children.

And Dot’s latest massive masterpiece is all in aid of protecting lions in South Africa.

“What we are trying to do is raise awareness for lion breeding and basically the cake features five lions in a natural setting,” Klerck said.

The cake is completely edible and took Klerck five weeks to make and all together 400hours to assemble. She used 300 eggs, 80kg of moulding chocolate, 100kg of chocolate and 130kg of fondant.

“The grass is sugar. The rocks are all fondant, the mane is corn silk from mielies. We had a very generous farmer who gave us loads for a few months.”

The biggest lion cake in the world will be on display today at the V&A Waterfront by the cake maestro for the official launch the FOUR PAWS #RiseUpAndRoar campaign.

We are super excited to see all of you at the V & A Waterfront. Come and meet Dot from Eat Cake Party who put together this masterpiece. Remember to #RiseUpAndRoar for our lion!
