Europe – After a lengthy court battle, McDonald’s lost the rights to the phrase ‘Big Mac’ in Europe after Supermac, an Irish fast food restaurant contested it.
Supermac is a family-owned chain and has more than 100 restaurants in Ireland. Founder, Pat McDonagh named the restaurant after his footballing nickname. His company went to have the trademark to ‘Big Mac’ overthrown and won.
Immediately, Burger King jumped on the bandwagon and started a campaign including ‘Big Mac’ on their menu. They really rubbed the salt in on this one.
In December 2017, Burger King in Cape Town sent McDonald’s a little gift a grill… We love seeing companies have a fun and healthy rivalry.
“With it being the season to be jolly, it means we like to give out gifts too. We wanted to reach out to our competitor during this joyful season to share with them – like our guests – how flame-grilled burgers taste.”
“As part of a global initiative, Burger King’s across the world will be wishing McDonald’s a flame-grilled festive season.” – Ezelna Jones, marketing executive for BURGER KING® South Africa
