Burger King and McDonald’s have been in a brand war for decades and the most recent blow was given in an advert about a rotting burger.
Global (26 February 2020) – Nando’s has stepped into the ring of a decade long battle between McDonald’s and Burger King. The brand feud has been going on for as long as the two fast food places have been in business. In all honesty, they are the same thing which is why they work so hard to steal each others market share.
Burger King has trolled McDonald’s a fair bit, like the time they made fun of the menu by naming their own variations of the Big Mac.
Andy Rice, a branding and advertising expert, spoke to Bruce Whitfield on the Money Show to discuss advertising and some of the pompous moves made by advertisers. He praised Nando’s on their brilliant response to the Whopper advert.
“I think Burger King was looking the other way at McDonald’s when Nando’s came zooming in. Burger King in America was making reference to the fact that people said a Big Mac would survive a nuclear war because it’s packed with preservatives. So Burger King filmed a Whopper, free of preservatives, deteriorating over 34 days. But I think they took their eye off the competition, because just as they were counting the praises they got for the stunt, along comes Nando’s.
They show the rotten Whopper on one plate and the other a completely empty plate, showing what happens to their burger after three minutes.” – Andy Rice, branding and advertising expert
Burger King created the advert to once again troll their archnemesis. It is said that McDonald’s burgers and chips don’t rot because they are so riddled with human-made elements and preservatives. Burger King filmed their burger rotting over a period of 34 days.

Naturally, Nando’s stepped in with their proudly South African humour and *whipped the floor with both brands. Take a look below.
