The Cape Town Opera is about to launch an eight-part conductors course on YouTube to help small-scale choir masters, gain valuable skills in conducting.

Cape Town, South Africa (29 September 2022) – South African choirs are some of the best in the world. To make sure choirs from all corners of the country thrive, the Cape Town Opera is launching an eight-part course to help.

Music unites people and inspires hope, so the Cape Town Opera’s Youth Development and Education Department expanded its e-learning programme. Conduct Like a Pro (CLAP) is geared toward teachers and aspiring conductors, working in promoting talent in emerging Opera and Choral practitioners.

Conduct Like a Pro focuses on various topics related to choral conducting including:

  • Choral characteristics and getting started,
  • basics,
  • score interpretation,
  • vocal balance and instrumentation,
  • working with different age groups,
  • vocal health: important aspects,
  • rehearsal room preparation and etiquette,
  • and becoming a team.

This project is made possible with the generous support of the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

The series will be available on the Cape Town Opera’s YouTube channel, thus making it accessible to all. You can subscribe to the channel here for all the updates on the videos.
