A Casper De Vries comedy skit is being shared all over social media showcasing what bad maths looks like… and it is hilarious.
Johannesburg, South Africa (23 January 2017) – The tribute to William Smith of the South African Learning Channel was originally filmed in 2003 for De Vries’ show – the CasperRasper TVshow – but is still just as funny today!
The real Learning Channel defined the standards of excellence for over 30 years on South African television and is still committed to providing quality education for all learners, parents and teachers in accordance with South Africa’s education policies.
The show started in 1990 and featured students who would call into the program to ask relevant questions from the South African curriculum.
William Smith, one of the main presenters on the show, became a house-hold name while teaching on the channel and as a result of his work on the programme, Smith was voted as one of the top three presenters on South African television in 1998.
South Africa education policies had recently changed allowing students to pass should they receive a 30% pass mark requirement for three out of six subjects needed to pass matric.
The Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande defended the new policy, saying young people would miss out on post-school education opportunities if it was raised.
Nzimande said the higher education system would take a matriculant who had passed matric but did not achieve a university entrance pass “to our further education and training colleges not because you are dom [dumb] but because that might be your inclination”.
Education experts, teacher unions and business leaders strongly criticised the quality of the matric certificate before and after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced the 78.2% matric pass rate. They said it did not equip matriculants with skills to successfully enter the job market and universities.
And even though South Africans do not agree with the new pass mark, they always seem to know how to have a laugh together on serious matters and that’s why the video has started trending again.
