If ‘Superstore’ was your comfort show, we’ve got some good news. A South African spin of the comedy hit is coming soon!

South Africa (15 January 2025) — Fans of ‘The Office’ were as thrilled as Dundler Mifflin’s co-workers clocking out early to learn that a South African spin-off of the hit show is in the works. Now, ‘Superstore’ fans are also set to be treating to a local rendition of the comedy!

A new format agreement is allowing for a South African adaptation of the US comedy Superstore for Showmax, making it the very first African adaptation of the show responsible for laughter all over the world.

“We’re looking forward to adding that distinctive South African flavour to it,” shared executive producer Mpho Lengane from Barkers Media who will be producing the local version.

The South African version is set to reopen Superstore in Zulu, unlike The Office revamp, which will primarily be in Afrikaans.

This marks 10 years since the Superstore pilot was picked up by NBC. The show ran for six successful seasons and was even deemed “one of TV’s greatest workplace comedies” by Rotten Tomatoes.

What Was the Original Superstore About?

Superstore followed the lives of employees at the fictional mega store, Cloud 9. It hilariously showed viewers the intersections and interactions between bright-eyed, bushy-tailed newbies and seen-it-all veterans, as well as the summer hires and in-it-for-life managers.

Their ‘adventures’ included facing greedy bargain hunters, managing riot-rearing sales and enduring grin-and-bear-it customer service experiences, all while navigating important and profound themes under the veneer of comedy.

The show’s cast also went on to be nominated for numerous awards, including Critics Choice Awards.

As for the South African version, the sky of ‘Cloud 9’ is the limit for where this show can go, and we can’t wait to whip out the popcorn for it all soon.
