Giphy

Giphy has teamed up with ‘Sign with Robert’ to create over 2000 new gif’s that will teach sign language, this is a fun and fast way to learn basic signing.

A GIF, technically known as a Graphics Interchange Format, is a short looped clip of multiple images for animated effects. They are generally shared on social media and contain short but hilarious footage. Giphy is one of the most popular sites online to access the animated GIF’s.

Giphy teamed up with Robert Demayo, a sign language educator, to create over 2000 GIF’s. Each GIF contains 1 word being signed by Demayo. The clever thing about this concept is that a GIF is looped and so the sign is repeated over and over until you learn to sign the word.

“Robert attended the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York and toured professionally with Sunshine Too, Cleveland Sign Stage Theatre and the Tony Award-winning National Theatre of the Deaf.”

The GIF’s are separated into various category for example there is a catergory for Date, Time and Weather. There are also catergories for expressions, emotions, lifestyle, food and drink, sports and many many more!

“The collection currently includes simple words and phrases which were decided upon by Giphy based on the the most popular words that users searched for, but they plan to roll out more complex words in the future.”

This is a brilliant idea in terms of easy learning and it will definitely bridge gaps between internet user’s who can sign and those that cannot.
