The Southern Cross Schools drummers don’t only play their own drums but each other’s drums as well, leading to a mesmerising performance for the Springboks.
Hoedspruit, South Africa (19 October 2023) – Students from the Southern Cross Schools used their Bok Friday recently to send an inspiring performance to the Springboks. These performances are fast becoming some of our favourite Rugby World Cup coverage. The talented youth of South Africa have not only been inspiring our national team but the nation as a whole.
The Southern Cross Schools, a private school situated in Hoedspruit just outside the Greater Kruger area, offers a schooling programme that connects youth with nature. There is a preschool, preparatory school and college.
The older students have spent some time practising their performance and it is mesmerising. The school has had a drum circle for many years and it is a popular after-school activity. Using the African djembe drum, the students play a vibrant and energetic melody.
The drum circle has been going since 2004 and is a part of the heartbeat of the school.
“Most days if you are anywhere near the Southern Cross Schools premises, you will hear the sound of our drummers reverberating across the surrounding bush.”
“The reality is that the Southern Cross Schools College drumming squad is a prestigious ‘club’ to belong to. Auditions take place and the best candidates became part of the senior squad where they develop from bass players to intermediate and finally to the centre seat, as leader.”
The seniors shared their skills, playing their own drums as well as their neighbours. Watching them perform at this level gave us goosebumps!
