Instead of having a present for her 84th birthday, this grandma spoiled the homeless.

Cape Town, Western Cape (05 August 2021) – A grandma from the Cape Flats in the Western Cape celebrated her 84th birthday by giving back to the community.

Hilda Claasen was unable to have a big bash because of the Coronavirus restrictions, so she organised a small get together for 40 homeless people in Town Centre. And while it was her day to receive presents, she gave a little something back. She gave them cake and even had party packs for each of them.

The little celebration took place this past Monday.

For the past 24 years, Claasen has looked after the needy. She feeds those in need on a weekly basis.

Claasen says seeing the homeless people sitting outside their shacks while she was walking to the Mitchells Plain Day Clinic last month inspired her to do something special for them.

“Wow! We need more people like Ouma Claasen, it was very thoughtful suggestion of her,” Amanda Claasen, a member of the community said.

“It brings such a warm feeling to one’s heart.”

Selina Roman, also part of the community, said:

“Ouma you are my hero. God bless you as you journey on. Still looking out for the homeless and entertaining them.”

“Beautiful gesture, she is the pillar of our community,” another one said.
