An unsuspecting wedding party arrived at the Cape Town home affairs to see a strike in action; when the protestors saw them, they sang for the bride-to-be.

Cape Town, South Africa (08 March 2023) – If you live in South Africa, you have most likely seen your share of protests, perhaps even been caught in one by surprise. That is what happened to a bride and groom who made their way to Home Affairs and got caught up in a strike. The protesters saw this and came together to offer the couple a wedding blessing.

The crowd can be heard singing a traditional wedding song for the couple as they try to figure out where to go next.

What we are sure was intended to be a small ceremony, turned into a big wedding celebration. The strike, which is for a higher living wage, was denied so staff that took part, did so unpaid. It is unclear whether the bride, groom and loved ones were aware of the strike but they forged forward in the hopes of being able to wed that day.

Once the crowd of protestors saw the bride walking along in her white dress, stylish pink shoes and long veil, they changed their tune and started singing “umakoti nge wethu” (the bride is ours), which is a popular South African wedding song.

Barry James Mitchell who shared the original video said the couple were married by the crowd. He didn’t confirm if they were able to be married inside the Home Affairs office.

The moment was also caught on camera from inside a neighbouring building.
