The King Edward VII School Pipe Band made its first appearance in South Africa on the 25th of March 1950, today they are regional champions!
The KES pipe band has a rich history, having been founded nearly 70 years ago, it still holds true to many of its traditions. A few times during its history, the band nearly disbanded but thankfully, people pushed through and kept it going. The band works hard and trains twice a week to keep their competitive edge.
“Today, the Pipe Band still endures through the hard work and dedication of many tutors who have given up a large portion of their time to ensure that not only the school has a pipe band but also that the band is very competitive on the competition field.”
“The band’s tutors are drawn from pipe bands with just as an illustrious history as the King Edward VII Pipe Band. These include the South African Irish Pipes and Drums, Transvaal Scottish, Richmond Avenue and Benoni Mac-Talla.”
Recently the band was crowned regional champions at the championships held at St Benedict’s Catholic School for Boys in Bedfordview on 14 July. The King Edward’s team put up a brilliant show and in the end, were crowned regional champions.
The team also walked away with the regional piping champions and the regional drumming champions titles. The King Edward novice juvenile teams and Grade 4 section were also awarded first place.
Below is a video of the band during a gathering at Jeppe high school. Their next performance will be on the 28th of July at the SA Championships at Benoni High.
