Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the negligent killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year.

South Africa’s ability to create laughter in tough controversial times is one of our best traits. Yesterdays news of Oscar’s sentencing is no different and South Africans have taken to social media to help the world with a little laughter with #LongerThanOscarsSentence

This is the third time in 2 years that the same hashtag has trended. This time it has gone global reaching over 25 million people in the space of 24 hours.

As Eusebius McKaiser says, “Our capacity to create laughter never ceases to amaze me.”
