A group of talented Pantsula dancers have been caught on camera and uploaded to YouTube showing off the incredible dance to the rest of the world.
DOT MOVE is a YouTube channel purely dedicated to dance. Through exclusive content, they use dance as a means to narrate stories and strong messages. The message is move… no matter what!
The YouTube movement recently visited South Africa and captured incredible dancers performing the Pantsula.
The traditional South African Pantsula is a highly energetic dance form that originated in the black townships of South Africa during the Apartheid era. It developed into a form of social commentary for black South Africans and has undergone several transformations with the country’s changing political tides.
Pantsula is a syncopated, quick-stepping, low to the ground form of dance which evokes the urban street culture of which it is a part. It is performed by groups of dancers who practice together for many hours each week.
It provides a powerful, stylized form of expression for those who dance it. As one pantsula dancer describes it “we have drive, we are one, we have power, we are young, strong and quick, we have our own style and we are competitive.”
For pantsula, the group is very important to the dance.
“When we were in South Africa, we had to say hello to our friends over at the townships in Johannesburg and capture their vibrant energy. We’re always amazed by how spirited, energetic and optimistic they are, especially considering the neigborhood’s notorious reputation.”
“Goes to show that there is good in every situation, and it’s important to keep a positive outlook on life… in other words, DANCE NO MATTER WHAT!”
