The SACS 1st XV put down the rugby balls and scrum caps to embrace the school’s musical element, performing Johnny Clegg’s Great Heart.
South Africa (13 March 2024)—The SACS 1st XV and the music department collaborated in a heartwarming performance of Johnny Clegg’s “Great Heart.”
The musical performance is a celebration of the diversity as a school and as a rugby team. Speaking to the school, they shared that singing plays a huge role in the team building of the players.
“Singing is an integral part of building team camaraderie so the idea was to take the rugby players out of their comfort zones and celebrate our diversity as a school by joining our brilliant music department in singing an iconic Johnny Clegg song ”Great Heart”
As for the song choice, it embodies the values that the school hopes to encourage among the students.
“The song ”Great Heart” talks to ”Ubuntu” and encourages us to embrace our diversity. Exactly what we try to achieve as a school. It’s great to be considered one of the best schools in South Africa but what we really aspire to is… to be the best school FOR South Africa”
It is clear some of the young men took to the task with great enthusiasm while others had a few extra nerves but each of the young men gave their best to put on an inspiring performance.
“After overcoming the initial nerves of singing in a studio in front of their peers, the boys gained in confidence and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was not only fun but was also a meaningful bonding experience and something the team will always have to look back on later in their lives.” – Chris McEwen, Head of Marketing
