Greig Bannatyne - South African man attempted an international flight in a speedo

A South African man who was pictured in his speedo at Malawi’s Kamuzu International Airport has become an internet sensation.

Malawi – Holidaymakers were left shocked at an airport in Africa when a passenger checked in wearing nothing but his swimming trunks.

Dressed in a tight pair of speedos and a pair of flip flops, the man was spotted checking in to a South African Airways flight at a Malawi airport.

The flyer, Greig Bannatyne, had been taking part in a charity swim across Lake Malawi and decided to take the swimming challenge a notch higher, all for charity.

“So while we enjoyed our victory beers, I was still in my speedo”

“It really spiralled from there with more and more of the swimmers and support crew pledging money if I attempted to fly home in my speedos. There were lots of smiles and shaking of heads in laughter, the staff behind the check in counter were almost in tears and insisted that I needed an aisle seat so that everyone could see me on the plane.”

Greig made it to passport control before security requested he gets dressed before boarding the plane.

“Immediately we had a security guard inform us that I could not enter like this, after explaining that it was for charity he let us go past. They were very friendly and we went to a room where they were trying to understand what I was doing.”

Unfortunately, as they didn’t have any official papers validating this, they requested that I put my top and shorts on but Greig’s near-naked journey home boosted the money raised from their charity swim, raising almost R20,000.

Mad Swimmers are a group of friends who get together and embark on a charity swim once a year. Previous events have seen them swim 10.5 miles from Spain to Morocco in just four hours and this year they embarked on a 15.5 miles swim across Lake Malawi.

They donate all money raised from their events to children’s charities and orphanages.
